Welcome to level 13 ### Welcome to level 13 Welcome to Hedy Expert (level 13-16)! By the end of this lesson, you can: * write code that is (almost) real Python code <aside class="notes"></aside>

Real Python code ### Real Python code The code we have used until now, was simplified. But from now we will use real Python code, that you could use elsewhere. <aside class="notes">Explain to your students that Python is a widely used programming language. Up until now we used different simplified versions of this language. But now we have reached the point where all the language that you use in Hedy is real Python code and thus can be used elsewhere. Also tell that there are quite some changes, but they are relatively minor changes.</aside>

print in Python ### print in Python For print you will have you to use parentheses from now on <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=print%20%28%27This%20code%20now%20looks%20like%20real%20Python%20language.%27%29%0Aprint%20%28%27You%20can%20print%20now%20outside%20of%20Hedy.%27%29%0Aprint%20%28%27Congratulations%2C%20you%20have%20become%20a%20programming%20pro%21%27%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes">Ask your students to recall how a print keyword was written before. Than show the new code and make sure they all see where the parentheses are.</aside>

ask ### ask We will also replace `ask` for the `input` keyword used in Python, again with parentheses. <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=age%20%3D%20input%20%28%27how%20old%20are%20you%3F%27%29%0Aprint%20%28%27You%20are%27%2C%20age%2C%20%27years%20old.%27%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes"></aside>

print with variables ### print with variables You can combine printing variables and text by using commas to separate them: <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=level%20%3D%20input%28%27Which%20level%20are%20you%20at%3F%27%29%0Aprint%28%27Good%20luck%20with%20level%27%2C%20level%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes">Let your students predict what will be the outcome of this code. Than run the code and show how the code prints the text inside the quotation marks literally and what is outside as the value of the variable. Show what happens if you put 'level' in the last line also in quotation marks.</aside>

`if` and `else` ### `if` and `else` In the if statement you will have to use two equal signs: ==. This is what most programming languages do as well. We also need a colon at the end of the if statement now. <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=favorite_bird%20%3D%20input%28%27What%20is%20your%20favorite%20bird%3F%27%29%0Aif%20favorite_bird%20%3D%3D%20%27penguin%27%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27Yeahh%2C%20it%20is%20mine%20too%21%27%29%0Aelif%20favorite_bird%20%3D%3D%20%27parrot%27%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27Great%20choice%21%27%29%0Aelse%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%22Meh%2C%20I%20don%27t%20agree%22%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes">Your students will have to get used to all the new syntax. This can be a tricky and frustrating process, give them lots of opportunities to practice the new syntax.</aside>

range in real Python ### range in real Python To count with the range keyword you now also need parentheses. <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=for%20i%20in%20range%20%281%2C%2010%29%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%20%28i%29%0Aprint%20%28%27We%20have%20counted%20to%2010.%27%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes">Ask your students to recall how they used this</aside>

Smaller and greater ### Smaller and greater you might already know the symbols the < and >. The < checks if the first number is smaller than the second, for example age < 12 checks if age is smaller than 12. The > checks if the first number is bigger than the second, for example points > 10 checks if points is larger than 10. <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=number%20%3D%20input%20%28%27pick%20a%20number%20below%2010%27%29%0Aif%20number%20%3C%2010%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27Nice%2C%20you%20picked%20a%20number%21%27%29%0Aif%20number%20%3E%2010%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27That%20is%20not%20a%20number%20below%2010.%27%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes">Show the code to your students. Ask them to predict what happens for which numbers. Run the code with different numbers. Finally, try the number 10 en show that the code now gives no output. The number 10 is neither greater than nor smaller than 10 and thus it gives no output, but we will solve this in the next slide.</aside>

Greater or equal ### Greater or equal There is also a symbol for greater than or equal to. Do you see the difference with the code before? <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=number%20%3D%20input%20%28%27pick%20a%20number%20below%2010%27%29%0Aif%20number%20%3C%2010%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27Nice%2C%20you%20picked%20a%20number%21%27%29%0Aif%20number%20%3E%3D%2010%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27That%20is%20not%20a%20number%20below%2010.%27%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes">Now, you can do the same. Run the code with different numbers, but also run it with 10. Make sure your students understand where the difference comes from.</aside>

Smaller or equal ### Smaller or equal There is also a symbol for smaller than or equal to. It works the same <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=number%20%3D%20input%20%28%27pick%20a%20number%20between%2010%20and%2020%27%29%0Aif%20number%20%3C%3D%2010%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27Pick%20another%20number%27%29%0Aif%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27Nice%2C%20you%20picked%20a%20number%21%27%29%0Aif%20number%20%3E%3D%2010%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%28%27That%20is%20not%20a%20number%20below%2010.%27%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes">Now, you can do the same. Run the code with different numbers, but also run it with 10. Make sure your students understand where the difference comes from. Show them that you can do the same for smaller than or equal to by changing '>='into '>' and '<=' into '<'.</aside>

Is or is not ### Is or is not From now, you should also use symbols for equal and not equal to. <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=answer%20%3D%20input%20%28%27How%20much%20is%205%2B5%3F%27%29%0Aif%20answer%20%3D%2010%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%20%28%27You%20gave%20the%20correct%20answer%21%27%29%0Aif%20answer%20%21%3D%2010%3A%0A%20%20%20%20print%20%28%27Incorrect.%20Try%20again%21%27%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes">Ask your students what the think the symbol '!=' means. Then show, by running the code, that it stands for not equal to.</aside>

Use # for a neat code ### Use # for a neat code Remember to keep your code neat and readable by using lines starting with # explaining what that part of the code does! <iframe class="fragment" src="/render_code/13?code=%23%20printing%20the%20advise%0Aprint%28%27Keep%20your%20code%20organized%20like%20this%21%27%29"></iframe> <aside class="notes"></aside>
